How to modify the NETCONF server machine

Hello,
I’m trying to use key based authentication to establish a NETCONF SSH connection on ConfD Basic. Following the documentation described in 14.4.1~14.4.2, I have generated my keys on the client machine.

The doc says to modify /var/system/users/admin/.ssh/authorized_keys on the server machine, but I cannot figure out how to access/modify the server machine. (I literally cannot figure out how to log in… both ssh and sftp into admin@127.0.0.1 12022 have resulted in connection error). I wish to know the command for this step since I cannot find documentation on it.

You need to ssh into your Linux system that is hosting ConfD with your Linux user account in order to create or modify the authorized_keys file. When you ssh into ConfD, you are only accessing ConfD’s CLI if CLI has been enabled to run over ssh.

I’m not sure we’re on the same page here.

I don’t have a dedicated host system running ConfD… I’m running it locally on my mac. That said, I have put the key in ~/.ssh directory. And here’s the output I’m getting:

$ ssh -vv -i ssh_host_rsa_key admin@127.0.0.1 -p 12022 -s netconf

We would be on the same page if you would have provided this information earlier in your posting.

When I modify the intro/1-2-3 example’s confd.conf file as follows:

$ diff confd.conf ../1-2-3-start-query-model/confd.conf
206d205
<     <sshPubkeyAuthentication>local</sshPubkeyAuthentication>

and start the ConfD server by running “make clean all start”.

I have already generated the rsa key pair on my Mac under ~/.ssh.

Following shows what you need to do on Mac to set up the NETCONF client’s environment when both client and server are running on the same machine:

$ ls ~/.ssh/id_rsa*
id_rsa	id_rsa.pub
$ ls -l /var/confd/homes/admin/.ssh/authorized_keys
-rw-rw-rw-  1 root  wheel  0 Nov  3 11:04 /var/confd/homes/admin/.ssh/authorized_keys
$ cat ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub >> /var/confd/homes/admin/.ssh/authorized_keys
$ ssh -vv admin@127.0.0.1 -p 2022 -s netconf

I’m not well versed in configuring ConfD, so it didn’t occur to me that this was something to specify until all the confusion.

Regardless, thanks for your patience. This solution worked.

If you haven’t yet done so, you can read through the ConfD Evaluation Kickstart guide at ConfD Evaluation Kick Start Guide and watch the ConfD training video at Training Videos | Tail-f Systems to get up to speed with ConfD.

You are welcome.
